Publishers Clearing House
By Nancy M. Hall
Does the date August 20th mean anything to any of you? How about February 28, April 30 and June 30? I feel quite sure that some of you know that these are dates of Publishers Clearing House big pay-outs. I am usually very stingy with money and as a rule have not entered even one dollar scratch offs. I was taught that gambling was wrong. I was motivated to enter the big one due to wanting to help a brother who has fallen on hard times. People who have won lotteries and continue to win advise that you should enter often and that you should visualize winning and what you will do with the money. Check. The people who set up lotteries have really tapped into our psychology. Logically, we know that our chances of winning are….(don’t even know the figures). Then there is the other non rational side of us which whispers that someone will win, and after all, there are some items which you could use or give as gifts. There are all kinds of techniques to keep you involved and buying: urgency, notices which play on your fears of missing out if you don’t respond by a certain time, giving you an opportunity to be a part of the “inner circle”, giving out driving instructions to your home, etc.I understand that McDonald’s has something going on in terms of prizes. There will be some weight gains over this one.
A much less obsession is with watching episodes of Castle. While perusing the TV this summer, I came across the show. I had not heard of it before and do not know anything about the actors. I was immediately addicted because of the relationship between Beckett and Castle. The sexual tension is palpable. I have no idea when this show started and ended; obviously the network is showing re-runs and in no particular order. Someone , please help! Do Castle and Kate ever get beyond the “friend” level?!
Do you have thoughts about what is in your genes? The popular movie star’s decision to have her breasts removed because she might have the gene for cancer is cause for many of us to wonder just what lurks in us. Experts at Duke share that they are working on a test which could determine if you might develop Alzheimer’s disease. Do you want to know? How would your life be altered? And then, there is what is happening in the legislature. Look for the op-ed piece in the W.S. Journal by Sam Mathews of the Shepherd’s Center on what cuts are doing to seniors. Yes, a number of things about which to muse.
